Sacred Heart School is pleased to announce the 2019-2020 Alumnus and Honorary Alumnus of the Year recipients. Both were recognized at the annual Homecoming celebration October 25, 2019.
The Alumnus of the Year was Becky DeSalvo Chambers Lewandowski, who graduated with honors from Sacred Heart Catholic School in 1970. Learning under the direction of nuns for all twelve years, Becky graduated with 27 classmates. After the nuns left Catholic Point in Center Ridge, Sacred Heart was the only option considered for Becky, her two sisters and brother, as her parents deeply valued religious education under the direction of nuns and the family atmosphere found in Catholic schools.
Becky continued her family’s legacy at Sacred Heart, dutifully following her son Heathe in sports and other activities. She served at dinners, helped with proms and homecoming, bake sales, and anywhere needed. Heathe graduated in 1992 and is now an Operations Manager for FedEx in Houston, TX.
As a student, Becky was active at Sacred Heart, serving in leadership positions in sports, pep club, choir, CYM, Girls’ State, class officers, and other school clubs and activities.
She has continued her dedication to service and leadership over the years, both in her career as a paralegal with the same firm for the past 41 years, and as a community volunteer with organizations such as March of Dimes, the Arkansas Legal Secretary Association, and the Rialto theater.
Becky has remained active in Sacred Heart parish, serving as a parish council member and officer, member of the recent capital campaign committee, and as wedding coordinator for the past 25 years. She has served the school as a long-standing member of the Bazaar committee for over 30 years and has helped with alumni reunions and various fundraisers.
Becky says she enjoys helping with weddings, dinners, decorating, visiting the sick and helping wherever she can. “The most important things in life are faith, family, and friends,” says Becky, or as she is known by most young people and children – Aunt Becky.
The 2019-2020 Honorary Alumnus of the Year was Kathleen Smith. Ms. Smith began her career in 1970, with her first teaching job leading her to Sacred Heart. To date she has been teaching nearly 49 years, 37.5 of those in Catholic schools.
Early in her career, she left Sacred Heart and moved briefly to West Memphis. Upon her return, she worked at a gas station while looking for a teaching job. She landed at Mount St. Mary in Little Rock and later moved to St. Joseph in Conway, where she eventually became principal. Four years in administration further convinced her that she was made for the classroom and she joined the faculty at UCA.
After 10 years at UCA, Ms. Smith had the opportunity to get back into 7-12 math here at Sacred Heart. “It was nice to be able to return to Sacred Heart in 2000,” said Ms. Smith. “I can finish my teaching career where I started it.”
Ms. Smith graduated from Sacred Heart High School in New Orleans, received a bachelor's in mathematics from the University of Dallas, and a master's in mathematics from UCA. She has a sister and a brother living in the New Orleans area, a brother in Wisconsin, and nieces and nephews in California, Utah, Texas, and Florida.
Says Ms. Smith, “There is something very special about Sacred Heart - the small size reminds me of my own high school. The peaceful atmosphere of the Morrilton area is a great stress reliever. There is no place I would rather be.”
Congratulations to the 2019-2020 Sacred Heart Alumnus and Honorary Alumnus of the Year!
